nisnews.nl THE HAGUE, 29/02/08 - Public broadcaster KRO has dropped plans to make a Biblical variant of MP Geert Wilders' short film on the Koran. "After exhaustive discussion, journalists on various editorial staff have decided not to make a film on the Bible,"

KRO said in a statement. "The aim of the project was to make a contribution to the debate on the method that Geert Wilders - according to Wilders himself - wants to apply in his film on the Koran. This aim could not however in the view of KRO journalists be achieved satisfactorily."

In his short film Fitna, intended to be shown in March, Wilders wants to show gruesome events said to be inspired by the Koran.
KRO, nota bene itself a Catholic broadcaster, wanted to show that such a film could also be made about the Bible. The film was "one of the plans for participating in the debate that Geert Wilders has aroused with his proposal to ban the Koran.

After extensive research, linking Bible quotations with real political events and acts of violence however produced an insufficient basis for a thorough journalistic production."

Several Dutch individuals and organizations have lodged complaints against Mr Wilders for incitement to racial hatred because he made a 15-minute film, called Fitna, to express his views about Islam. VNO-NCW, the Federation of Dutch Employers, has ordered its lawyers to see whether it is possible to claim damages from Mr Wilders for the loss of income which Dutch companies may possibly suffer as a result of a boycott of Dutch products by Muslims who are angry at Mr Wilders and at the fact that the Dutch have not been able to shut him up. “ Companies like Shell, Philips and Unilever are easy to recognize as Dutch companies,” VNO-NCW chairman Bernard Wientjes told the newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad. “I do not know how rich Geert Wilders is, or how well insured he is, but if we suffer from a boycott, we will investigate whether it is possible to claim damages from him.” Last November, Doekle Terpstra, a member of the board of Unilever, called upon the Dutch to “rise in order to stop Wilders” because “Geert Wilders is evil and evil has to be stopped.”

Amanpour wisely turned to religious historian and popular writer Karen Armstrong for explanations. Armstrong’s 2001 book, The Battle for God, explores the rise of fundamentalism in Judaism, Islam and Christianity.

What Armstrong deftly and definitively showed in her book is that fundamentalism is a direct reaction to secular society and that the primary enemy for most fundamentalists is not the far-away enemy of other people, but their coreligionists who have a more lax religious outlook.

Across the Atlantic Ocean in one of the most permissive societies in Europe, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who was raised as a conservative Muslim, has become a target of a more violent form of jihad.  A former member of the Dutch Parliament and now an atheist, Ali collaborated with artist Theo van Gogh on a film critical of Islam’s treatment of women.  As a result, Van Gogh was murdered by a Muslim extremist, and Ali remains a target.

Ayaan Hersi Ali, born in Somalia, became a Dutch citizen and, in 2003, was elected to the Dutch parliament. She is outspoken about the treatment of Muslim women and caused heated debate within the Muslim community because of her short film, Submission, in which verses of the Koran are projected onto the bodies of naked women. Hirshi Ali now lives in the United States of America and works at the AEI.

Sheik Imam & Fawaz Jneid heads a mosque in the Hague and has been accused of making radical statements.
